I started *Die Sättigung* expecting another run-of-the-mill revenge thriller, but Haller’s sharp wit and unrelenting pacing quickly dispelled that notion. The premise—Dresden’s Carnival marred by a killer who treats murder like art—is ripe for atmosphere, and Haller delivers. The way the story ties the present-day killings to a decades-old betrayal is clever, though it does require close attention to avoid getting lost in the twists. Vossenkuhl’s narration is a standout; his ability to switch between detached professionalism and outright fury made the audiobook feel like a live performance. The only misstep was the abrupt shift in the third act, where a major revelation arrives with little buildup, undercutting some of the tension. What lingers is the unsettling question at the heart of the book: What happens when revenge becomes an addiction? The killer’s motives aren’t just evil—they’re almost scientific, as if he’s conducting an experiment on human suffering. The Carnival setting, usually a symbol of joy, becomes a cage for both victims and pursuers, amplifying the claustrophobia. It’s a bold choice, and Haller pulls it off, though the body horror might be too graphic for squeamish listeners. Still, if you crave thrillers that challenge you intellectually while keeping you on edge, this is a cut above the rest.
