I went into *Dispute* expecting another space-fantasy slog, but Oswald and Baldree turned my expectations into confetti. Baldree’s narration is the kind of performance that makes you forget you’re listening to an audiobook; it’s more like eavesdropping on a live wire threaded through a high-stakes political thriller. His Silas is a revelation—equal parts cynical and magnetic, a man who’s spent too long in the shadows but still flinches when the light hits too close. The supporting cast is where this audiobook truly shines, though. Baldree juggles a dozen distinct voices without breaking a sweat, from the honeyed venom of Silas’s ex-lover to the gravel-voiced warlord who sounds like he gargles nails for breakfast. The chemistry between characters crackles, especially in scenes where trust is a liability. That said, *Dispute* isn’t without its rough edges. Oswald’s world-building is dense, and while Baldree’s performance keeps things engaging, the sheer volume of factions, planets, and political machinations can feel overwhelming. I had to rewind twice to untangle who was allied with whom—a minor gripe, but one that momentarily pulled me out of the immersion. The climax, too, leans into spectacle over substance, sacrificing some emotional payoff for a big, explosive set-piece. Still, these are nitpicks in an otherwise stellar listening experience. By the final hour, I was fully invested, and Baldree’s performance had me leaning in like a kid at storytime, desperate to know what happens next. If you crave a space opera that’s as smart as it is explosive, with a narrator who elevates every twist, *Dispute* is your next obsession.
