Double or Nothing

I’ll admit, I went into *Double or Nothing* expecting another run-of-the-mill urban fantasy power trip. What I got instead was a masterclass in *tension*. Craig Schaefer writes Faust like a man who’s one bad decision away from a bullet in the brain, and Adam Verner’s narration sells every ounce of that desperation. There’s a scene early on where Faust negotiates with a demon in a casino backroom, and Verner’s delivery—equal parts exhaustion and dark humor—made me *lean in*. That’s the kind of immersion this audiobook excels at: you’re not just listening, you’re holding your breath right alongside him. The pacing is relentless, but not in a breathless, action-movie way. This is more like a high-stakes poker game where every chapter raise the ante. Schaefer’s Vegas feels *lived-in*, from the greasy diners to the back-alley summoning circles, and the magic system—rooted in bargains and blood—adds a layer of consequence most urban fantasy lacks. My only critique? The side characters sometimes blur together in the chaos of the plot, and Verner’s female voices occasionally dip into caricature (though his male roles are *flawless*). Also, if you’re new to the series, you’ll be playing catch-up—this isn’t a gentle on-ramp. But if you like your fantasy with a chaser of noir, a dash of *Ocean’s Eleven* cynicism, and a narrator who sounds like he’s seen the bottom of a whiskey bottle one too many times, *Double or Nothing* is a hell of a bet.
