Drachenwächter [Dragon's Guardian]

I went into *Drachenwächter* expecting another forgettable YA fantasy, but Richardson’s sharp prose and Böhm’s magnetic narration turned this into a compulsively listenable saga. Böhm’s performance is the secret weapon—his portrayal of Mari’s exhaustion and flickering hope is so visceral you’ll feel the weight of her failures in your chest, while his voicing of the dragons (especially Höfuð) lands like a physical presence, all rumbling bass and ancient menace. The magic system feels fresh, too, rooted in sacrifice and consequence rather than sparkly shortcuts. That said, the middle act sags slightly with an overlong tournament sequence that tests patience, and the romance subplot arrives a beat too late to feel earned rather than convenient. Still, the finale is worth the slog—a payoff that’s earned, messy, and utterly satisfying. Production-wise, the audio is flawless: no muffled whispers or abrupt cuts, just clean, immersive sound design that makes you forget you’re listening to a recording. By the time Höfuð’s bond fully ignites, you’ll be cheering right alongside Mari. If you crave dragons that feel dangerous, not just decorative, this is your next obsession.
