I’ll admit, I approached *Dragon Riders* skeptical of yet another ‘kids bond with magical creature’ story, but Alexander Lawes subverts expectations from the first chapter. The attack on the monastery isn’t just an inciting incident; it’s a brutal, disorienting sequence that forces the protagonists into motion before they—or the listener—can catch their breath. The dragon’s introduction is equally refreshing: no grand revelation, just a half-dead hatchling they save on impulse, its survival as precarious as their own. This isn’t a tale of instant mastery; the children’s early attempts to communicate with the dragon are clumsy, even frustrating, which makes their eventual synergy feel earned. Colette Redgrave’s performance elevates the material further. She nails the protagonists’ distinct voices—one pragmatic, one bookish, one fiercely loyal—without slipping into caricature. Her pacing is impeccable, especially in the aerial battle scenes, where the prose’s kinetic energy could easily become chaotic in lesser hands. My only critique? The villain’s motives feel underdeveloped; we’re told they’re ruthless, but their perspective is so thin it occasionally reduces them to a plot device. And while the short runtime is a strength, the ending’s abruptness left me craving just one more scene to linger on the characters’ hard-won triumph. Still, these are minor quibbles. For listeners who love fantasy that balances wonder with real stakes—and narration that makes every minute count—this is a gem.
