The Moscow Enigma

I went into *The Moscow Enigma* expecting another glossy, vodka-soaked spy caper, but Hirsch delivered something far sharper: a thriller that uses Moscow’s underbelly as a mirror to our own complicity in systems of power. Colette Redgrave’s narration is the secret weapon here—she doesn’t just read the lines; she *inhabits* them. Her Alexandra is a woman who’s spent years perfecting the art of dissociation, and Redgrave sells the slow-motion crack in that armor with devastating subtlety. The pacing is relentless, but not in the way you’d expect: Hirsch lingers on the quiet moments—the way Alexandra counts the ticks of a clock in a client’s apartment, the hollow echo of her heels on a Moscow winter street—making the violence feel even more jarring by contrast. That said, the book isn’t without its hiccups. Hirsch occasionally leans too hard on the "Moscow as a character" metaphor, with some scenes veering into tourist-board propaganda (yes, the Kremlin’s red walls *are* ominous, but a third description of their "brutal symmetry" tests your patience). And while Redgrave is excellent, her transitions between Russian-accented narration and neutral English occasionally jar, as if the audiobook couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a spy novel or a period piece. Still, these are minor quibbles in a story that’s as much about the cost of ambition as it is about murder. If you want a thriller that lingers in your head like the aftertaste of cheap champagne in a five-star hotel bar, this is for you.
