I’ll admit, I side-eyed *DragonQuest* at first. A heroine named Kale? A wizard who loses his dragon *and* his memory? It all screamed *too cute by half*. But within an hour, Grafton’s narration had me hooked—not because the story is flawless, but because it’s *earnest*. She sells the humor without overdoing the silliness, especially in Fenworth’s scenes, where his rambling monologues about ‘proper dragon etiquette’ had me laughing out loud on my commute. The real standout, though, is how she voices Regidor, the meech dragon: a mix of petulant toddler and ancient wisdom, delivered with a lisp that somehow avoids being grating. That said, this isn’t a book for listeners craving breakneck pacing. Paul’s worldbuilding is rich but *meandering*—there’s a 20-minute stretch where Kale literally just *walks through a bog*, and while the atmospheric descriptions are lovely, I found my mind wandering. The plot also leans heavily on contrived misunderstandings (Kale’s refusal to ask for help gets old fast), and the villain’s motives are paper-thin. But here’s the thing: none of that mattered much by the end, because the *vibe* is so disarmingly sweet. The audiobook’s production is clean, with no jarring volume shifts, and Grafton’s character voices are distinct enough that I never confused who was speaking—even in chaotic group scenes. If you love stories where the journey (and the oddball companions) matter more than the destination, this is a gem. Just don’t expect edge-of-your-seat tension—expect, instead, the audio equivalent of a warm blanket and a cup of tea, with dragons.
