Dungeon Item Shop: Volume 1

I went into *Dungeon Item Shop* expecting another flavor of escapism, but Rhodes serves up something far more interesting: a world where the afterlife is just another marketplace, and the only currency that matters is leverage. Andrea Emmes nails this from the opening scene, her voice dipping into weary cynicism when Fresh stumbles into the shop’s light, then sharpening into razor-wit as our heroine realizes she’s traded one cage for another. The pacing is a slow burn with moments of explosive payoff—think *The Good Place* meets *Dark Souls*, if Eleanor Shellstrop had to haggle with a demon over a cursed rapier. There are places where the narration drags. Emmes occasionally over-enunciates in quieter scenes, which pulls me out of the moment when I’m craving immersion. And while the worldbuilding is rich, some factions and characters blur together in the early acts. But these are nitpicks in an audiobook that otherwise delivers the goods. By the final act, I was invested in Fresh’s gambit to outmaneuver a god who trades in suffering. If you’re tired of *isekai* that coddles its protagonist, this gritty, transactional fantasy will scratch that itch—and Emmes’ performance ensures you’ll hear every crack in the system.
