Glemboski’s performance is the audiobook’s secret weapon. She nails the granular details—the coughs of the sick, the crunch of broken glass under boots—layering texture into Stone’s bleak landscape without overplaying the misery. Her pacing keeps the dread from becoming a slog; every clipped sentence, every prolonged silence feels intentional, a nod to the story’s suffocating reality. That said, I wished she’d pushed the contrast a bit harder between the town’s factions—the lines between ‘good’ and ‘desperate’ blur when everyone’s starving, and the vocal uniformity occasionally smooths over those nuances. Still, her work elevates what could’ve been another formulaic collapse tale into something visceral. Stone’s world feels lived-in, the stakes visceral, and the ending—a masterclass in cruel ambiguity—lingers like gunpowder on your tongue. If dystopian audiobooks were a triage unit, this is the one you’d want on IV duty.
