I’ll admit, I’ve listened to my fair share of EMP apocalypse stories, but *EMP Disaster* stuck with me because Hamilton refuses to give us easy wins. Melanie isn’t a superhuman protagonist—she’s a woman running on fumes, making progressively worse decisions to keep moving forward. The audiobook’s pacing mirrors that exhaustion: the first act drags like an overloaded backpack, but by the time the stakes kick into high gear, you’re too invested to pause. Glemboski’s narration is a masterclass in subtlety. Her voice for Melanie’s boss, Roy, is gruff but weary, and the way she differentiates the endless parade of secondary characters—through tone rather than accent—is impressive. The sound design is minimal but effective; you’ll flinch at the creak of a door or the distant sound of gunfire, even if you’re listening on 1.25x speed. My biggest critique? The middle act sags a bit with repetition—too many scenes where Melanie’s group debates the same survival choices. A tighter edit could’ve shaved off an hour without losing impact. And while I appreciate the moral gray zones, some of the darker turns feel tonally jarring in an otherwise grounded story. Still, the payoff in the final act makes the slog worth it. If you’re craving an apocalypse where the real horror isn’t zombies but the people left behind, this is your audiobook.
