The real star, though, is Hövenmark’s script-like structure. Chapters unfold like radio segments, complete with fake ads and weather reports that somehow feel *loaded* with subtext. It’s a bold choice, and it mostly pays off—though the gimmick occasionally clashes with the story’s darker turns. When a character dies mid-broadcast, the abrupt cut to a cheery jingle is brilliant; when the same trick repeats later, it feels a touch overplayed. The mystery itself is tightly plotted, with a closed-circle suspect pool that keeps you guessing, but the real draw is the atmosphere. The audiobook’s production leans into its radio conceit with subtle sound design—faint background static, the echo of a studio mic—without ever crossing into audio drama territory. My only real critique? The female characters sometimes feel underwritten, their motivations reduced to reactive roles in the men’s power struggles. Still, the final act’s twist, delivered with Engelbrektson’s signature mix of exhaustion and triumph, makes up for it.
