Work’s real talent lies in her refusal to let Victoria Banks be either a victim or a villain—she’s a woman who’s spent a lifetime perfecting the art of being underestimated, and Barrett’s narration makes you *feel* the exhaustion behind her poise. There’s a scene early on where Victoria sips whiskey in a cashmere wrap while police trample her Persian rugs, and Barrett’s delivery—cool, but with a thread of steel—sells her quiet defiance better than any internal monologue could. The pacing is where this audiobook shines and, occasionally, stumbles. The first act is *tight*, with Work dropping breadcrumbs like a pro (pay attention to the way Victoria’s jewelry choices are described—they’re not just details, they’re clues). But the middle drags slightly when the investigation pivots to Jack Martin’s backstory; while Barrett gives the detective’s PTSD-flavored flashbacks a raw edge, the subplot feels like a detour in what’s otherwise a lean, location-driven mystery. That said, the finale more than makes up for it—a confrontation on a ski lift that had me white-knuckling my headphones, thanks in part to the production’s crisp sound design (the creak of cables, the wind howling through the towers). If you’re tired of thrillers where the rich are either mustache-twirling monsters or hapless lambs, this is your antidote.
