About This Audiobook

*Everything to Lose* isn’t just another wealthy-wife-accused thriller—it’s a razor-sharp dissection of how power, privilege, and small-town secrets collide in the rarified air of Vail’s ultra-rich. Shannon Work skips the clichés of the genre by grounding the mystery in the unnerving specifics of high-altitude society: the way a mansion’s floor-to-ceiling windows can feel like a fishbowl, or how a detective’s boots crunch on packed snow as he navigates a victim’s last, carefully curated steps. This isn’t a whodunit with a tidy twist; it’s a *why*-dunit, where every character’s alibi is as meticulously constructed as their public image.

Boyd Barrett’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon—his voice carries the gravelly weight of a man who’s seen too much, but his delivery never slips into caricature. He nails the tension between Victoria Banks’ polished veneer and her simmering rage, while giving Jack Martin the weary, seen-it-all cadence of a detective who knows the rich play by different rules. The production leans into atmospheric pauses, letting the silence of a Colorado blizzard or the hum of a ski lift underscore the isolation of the characters. It’s a masterclass in how audio can turn a thriller into an immersive, almost cinematic experience.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes when I saw the setup: rich wife, dead husband, snowy mansion. But *Everything to Lose* disarmed me within chapters. Work’s real talent lies in her refusal to let Victoria Banks be either a victim or a villain—she’s a woman who’s spent a lifetime perfecting the art of being underestimated, and Barrett’s narration makes you *feel* the exhaustion behind her poise. There’s a scene early on where Victoria sips whiskey in a cashmere wrap while police trample her Persian rugs, and Barrett’s delivery—cool, but with a thread of steel—sells her quiet defiance better than any internal monologue could. The pacing is where this audiobook shines and, occasionally, stumbles. The first act is *tight*, with Work dropping breadcrumbs like a pro (pay attention to the way Victoria’s jewelry choices are described—they’re not just details, they’re clues). But the middle drags slightly when the investigation pivots to Jack Martin’s backstory; while Barrett gives the detective’s PTSD-flavored flashbacks a raw edge, the subplot feels like a detour in what’s otherwise a lean, location-driven mystery. That said, the finale more than makes up for it—a confrontation on a ski lift that had me white-knuckling my headphones, thanks in part to the production’s crisp sound design (the creak of cables, the wind howling through the towers). If you’re tired of thrillers where the rich are either mustache-twirling monsters or hapless lambs, this is your antidote. And if you’ve ever wondered how a voice can make a character’s silence more revealing than their words, Boyd Barrett’s performance is a clinic. Just be warned: you’ll never look at a ski chalet the same way again.
