Exit Black

I’ll admit, I went into *Exit Black* expecting another *Gravity*-meets-*Ocean’s Eleven* retread, but Joe Pitkin subverts the trope from the first chapter. The protagonist, Cole, is a thief with an engineering degree and a chip on his shoulder the size of a satellite dish, and his voice—cynical, self-aware, and darkly funny—carries the story. The plot kicks off with a heist that goes sideways (as they do), but the real hook is *Imperium* itself: a spinning luxury hotel where the rich sip martinis in artificial gravity while the staff scrub bloodstains from the bulkheads. Pitkin’s worldbuilding is economical but razor-sharp, dropping details like the cost of oxygen per breath or the way a bullet behaves in microgravity without ever slowing the momentum. Carolina Hoyos’ narration is a masterclass in tonal balance. She nails Cole’s sarcasm—think a spacefaring Philip Marlowe—without overdoing the gruffness, and her pacing is impeccable. The action scenes crackle with energy, and she handles the tech-heavy dialogue so naturally you’ll never feel lost. My only critique? The secondary characters sometimes blur together; a few more distinct vocal tags would’ve helped. And while the ending lands with a satisfying *thud*, the final twist relies a bit too much on a last-minute reveal that feels slightly undercooked. Still, the ride there is so tense and darkly entertaining that it’s easy to forgive. If you love your thrillers smart, snarky, and set in a place where one wrong move means a very permanent exit, this is your audiobook.
