E.B. Stevens is the secret weapon of this audiobook. His ability to distinguish characters—especially Seth’s snark and Kendra’s growing confidence—is razor-sharp, and he never falls into the trap of over-the-top delivery that can plague young-adult fantasy. The narration has a natural rhythm, too; he never stumbles over Mull’s worldbuilding, which is impressive given how dense some of the lore gets. That said, there’s a moment midway where a key creature’s introduction feels a tad rushed in Stevens’ delivery—almost like he’s skimming over its significance. It’s a minor hiccup in an otherwise stellar performance. The pacing is the real standout here. This story zips along, balancing action set pieces with quieter moments of character development. The production quality is top-tier, with sound effects that enhance immersion without distracting from the words. My only nitpick? The chapter transitions could benefit from a more dynamic audio cue—something to signal a shift in tone or location without breaking the spell. But these are quibbles in an audiobook that otherwise feels tailor-made for road trips or bedtime-listening marathons. If your kiddo loved the first book, they’ll be begging for this installment—and you’ll be happy to oblige.
