I’ve listened to a lot of fantasy audiobooks, and Kirby Heyborne remains one of the few narrators who can make me forget I’m listening to one person. In Master of the Phantom Isle, he doesn’t just perform voices—he builds emotional architecture. The scene where the sanctuary collapses under dragonfire? Chilling. You can hear the crumbling stone in the pauses between words, and Heyborne’s restrained panic makes it visceral. The story itself is a confident escalation from earlier entries, with Celebrant emerging as a villain who’s terrifying not because he’s powerful, but because he’s persuasive. That moral complexity is rare in children’s fantasy, and it lands here with real impact. That said, the middle section drags slightly under exposition, especially when detailing the political fractures between sanctuaries. While necessary, it slows the momentum that the first act builds so beautifully. Also, some secondary characters feel underutilized—there’s a rogue dragon scholar that’s introduced with promise but quickly sidelined. Still, the final hour is a masterclass in payoff, with twists that reframe earlier choices and a cliffhanger that left me immediately searching for the next book. This isn’t just a kids’ adventure—it’s a sophisticated, sound-rich narrative that respects its audience’s intelligence.
