Kydd’s performance as the emotionally locked-down protagonist is particularly stellar; he doesn’t just *sound* guarded, he *sounds* like a man who’s spent years perfecting the art of not feeling. When his voice finally cracks? Chills. Delane, meanwhile, brings a restless energy to her character, her narration flickering between defiance and desperation in a way that makes her flaws compelling, not cliché. The pacing is where this audiobook shines—and occasionally stumbles. The first half is a delicious, agonizing build, with Mack dropping breadcrumbs of backstory that make the attraction feel earned. But the middle drags slightly during a subplot involving a secondary character’s drama; it’s well-written, but tonally jarring when you’re itching for the leads to collide again. That said, the payoff is worth it: the sex scenes are explicit but never gratuitous, and the emotional fallout is handled with a rawness that’s missing from most erotica. My only real critique? The ending wraps up *just* a touch too neatly for a story that otherwise thrives on ambiguity. Still, this is one of the few audiobooks I’ve immediately replayed—partly for the heat, but mostly because I missed the way these two narrators made silence feel like a third character in the room.
