The pacing is steady, allowing the story's emotional beats to land with full force. Hardy's wit is often underappreciated, but Sandys ensures it's not lost on the listener. If I have one critique, it's that Sandys' interpretation of Bathsheba can sometimes lean a bit too much into her impulsiveness, making her less sympathetic than she could be. But that's a minor quibble in an otherwise outstanding performance. This is a 'Far from the Madding Crowd' for the 21st century, a classic that feels anything but old-fashioned.
