Michael Kitchen’s narration is the heart of this audiobook, and he earns every ounce of its emotional weight. His Swithin is all youthful fire, his voice cracking with the kind of earnestness that makes you believe in instant, all-consuming love—even when Hardy’s plot stretches credibility. Viviette, by contrast, is a masterclass in restrained despair; Kitchen’s portrayal of her quiet resistance to her hollow marriage is heartbreakingly subtle, especially in her exchanges with the dismissive Lady Constantine. The production is crisp, with no muddy audio to distract from Hardy’s prose, though the mid-section drags slightly as the romance bumps against the novel’s philosophical detours. That said, the payoff arrives with the kind of inevitability Hardy excels at: a tragedy that feels inevitable yet still aches. If you’re here for a love story that’s equal parts tender and ruthless, this is your book—but be warned, Hardy doesn’t offer easy comforts.
