Laurel Lefkow doesn’t just narrate this—she haunts it. Her cadence shifts like weather: a whispery drawl for Nora’s unraveling sanity, a razor’s edge when the killer’s taunting calls crackle over old police recordings. There’s a scene mid-book where Lefkow delivers a block of exposition about institutional corruption in a single, breathless take that made me pause the audio just to savor how perfectly she paced it. But don’t mistake this as flawless performance. At one point, a minor character’s accent drifted so far toward generic Eastern European that I had to rewind to check if I’d missed a dialect lesson. The story’s pacing is its real star. The first 90 minutes unfold like a slow-burn fuse, but once that hospital’s basement doors creak open, the book surfs a wave of claustrophobic dread. Hansen’s trick—hinting that every character, even the sympathetic ones, might be harboring the killer’s next move—works like psychological quicksand. My only complaint? The final confrontation wraps a bit too neatly, as if the body count needed to justify a tidy bow. Still, by the time you reach the last card dealt, you’ll feel like you’ve survived the fallout yourself. Lefkow’s performance ensures it feels like a personal betrayal.
