That said, the middle act drags slightly with *too* much internal colony politics; I found myself fast-forwarding through a few nest-management tangents that felt like padding in an otherwise tight narrative. The narration, though, is flawless. Jeff Hays delivers Anthony’s voice with the weary precision of a chess player who’s always three moves ahead but knows the board might flip. Annie Ellicott’s Brilliant is the perfect foil—her performance oscillates between cocky swagger and vulnerable insecurity, making their mentor-mentee dynamic the heart of the audiobook. The sound design is understated but effective: the distant *click-click* of mandibles during tense negotiations, the way the audio seems to *expand* during large-scale battles. My only gripe? The ka’armodo, while menacing, lack the mythic presence of the ants—their motivations feel thin compared to the colony’s intricate hierarchy.
