Final Deployment

I went into *Final Deployment* expecting another run-of-the-mill military sci-fi yarn, but Wilt and Wincott turned it into an experience. Wincott’s narration is the standout—his voice for Traxel is so guttural and exhausted that you can practically feel the weight of every battle scar the man’s carrying. The squad’s banter and arguments feel natural, not like forced comic relief, and when things get quiet (which isn’t often), his performance deepens the unease. The story’s strength lies in its refusal to glorify war. There’s no triumphant heroics here, just soldiers doing terrible things because they have no other choice. The civil war on Rilis is a powder keg, and Wilt does an excellent job making the political fractures feel as dangerous as the battlefield. If I had one critique, it’s that the worldbuilding occasionally trips over itself. Small details—like how the Scions’ tech works or the specifics of the civil war’s factions—can feel under-explained in the heat of the moment, leaving you scrambling to keep up. And while Wincott’s performance is stellar, there were a few instances where his voice work for secondary characters started to blend together, making it hard to distinguish who was speaking in the chaos of a firefight. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. By the time the squad hits their final deployment, you’ll be emotionally invested in their fate, and Wincott’s narration ensures you’ll ride every high and low with them. If you want sci-fi that punches you in the gut and keeps you guessing, this is an audiobook you won’t regret diving into.
