The back-and-forth between them creates a controlled pulse that carries the book through its many twists. Plotwise, Coulter threads a present-day threat with memories of a past catastrophe, weaving in multiple suspects, forensics cues, and procedural checkpoints that feel earned rather than gimmicky. The author excels at cranking tension in short chapters that end on a hinge, then letting the moment breathe in the next scene. There are moments where the cast of secondary players blur; one or two red herrings linger longer than necessary, and a few transitions can feel abrupt in the audio medium. Still, the readability remains high, aided by the crisp sound design and the performers' ability to carve distinct identities for each character.
