His voice carries the unmistakable cadence of a man who’s spent a lifetime making the obscure feel urgent—equal parts professor and provocateur. The pacing is relentless but never rushed, deftly balancing hard science with playful anecdotes (the chapter on beetle flight is a personal favorite). That said, the audiobook stumbles slightly in the final third, where some transitions feel abrupt, as if the editor wanted to trim 20 minutes but forgot to smooth the seams. Still, the production is otherwise crisp, with Richard’s dry humor landing harder than the occasional awkward segue. What truly sets this apart is Dawkins’ ability to make you care about the mechanics of flight—not just as a metaphor for freedom, but as a testament to evolution’s creativity. The section on swifts, which can fly for months without landing, is pure poetry. However, if you’re not already sold on Dawkins’ style, the opening chapters might feel like a lecture until his trademark irreverence kicks in. By the time he dissects the improbable physics of a bumblebee’s flight, you’ll be hooked—or at least annoyingly well-informed at dinner parties. Minor quibbles aside, this is a rare audiobook that delivers both substance and spectacle in equal measure.
