Mitchley’s narration is pitch-perfect here; his voice drops to a conspiratorial whisper during the supernatural passages, then sharpens into something almost clinical when the protagonist’s obsession takes over. It’s a performance that understands Conrad’s trick: the real horror isn’t the supernatural, but the human mind’s capacity for self-deception. That said, this isn’t a flawless listen. Conrad’s prose, while brilliant, can feel *oppressive* in audio form—his layered clauses and nautical jargon (endless rigging metaphors, I’m looking at you) demand focus, and Mitchley’s unhurried delivery doesn’t always help. In ‘Il Conde,’ a tale of colonial exploitation disguised as romance, the pacing drags in the middle, and I found myself rewinding to parse the political subtext. Yet these stumbles feel intentional, part of Conrad’s project to make the listener *work* for the payoff. The production itself is pristine—no distracting edits, no uneven volume—but the real star is how Mitchley leans into the ambiguity. When a character’s ‘love’ tips into manipulation, his tone stays maddeningly neutral, forcing you to sit with the discomfort. If you’re after escapism, look elsewhere. But if you want literature that lingers like a bruise, this is it.
