Eric Jason Martin’s narration is the secret weapon of *Forge Master*—he doesn’t just read Thorn’s story; he *embodies* it. His voice drips with the kind of weary, battle-worn charisma that makes Thorn feel like a real person, not just a protagonist. The way he handles Thorn’s internal monologues is especially impressive; you can hear the exhaustion and stubborn defiance in every syllable, like a man who’s been forged and hammered into shape by forces beyond his control. The sound design is minimal but effective, using subtle echoes and atmospheric layers to underscore the vast, indifferent cosmos Thorn is trapped in. It’s immersive without ever distracting from the story. That said, the book isn’t without its hiccups. The pacing occasionally stutters in the middle act, where Thorn’s journey through the void drags a bit more than it should—it’s like the story needs to catch its breath, but the breath itself feels a little too long. And while the worldbuilding is rich, some of the lore dumps can be clunky, landing with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise stellar experience. If you’re a fan of dark fantasy with a mechanical edge, where every character feels like they’ve been tempered in fire, this audiobook will leave you burned but satisfied. The ending, in particular, is a gut-punch of emotional payoff wrapped in explosive action. Martin sells every moment, and the story earns its place among the greats of modern fantasy.
