The story’s first act drags a hair too long for my tastes; the setup of Smilla’s isolation and the boy’s death feels like wading through slush before the avalanche hits. But once the mystery unravels—tying Greenland’s colonial scars to Copenhagen’s hidden rot—Høeg’s prose (and Ullner’s delivery) turns the audiobook into a sleigh ride through a blizzard of clues. My one real critique? The ending feels rushed, like Høeg sprinted to the finish line after a marathon. Still, Ullner’s performance alone makes this worth the trip, especially if you love narrators who don’t just tell the story but *live* in its skin.
