About This Audiobook

Len Deighton's 'Funeral in Berlin' is a gripping espionage thriller that drops you into the heart of 1963's divided city. Our nameless hero, a master of deception, navigates a web of lies and double agents with sharp, concise prose that's as chilling as the Berlin winter. James Lailey's narration is a standout, his dry, measured delivery perfectly capturing the story's understated tension. Distinctive is Deighton's use of humor, a dark, wry wit that cuts through the tension like a knife.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I was hooked from the get-go. Lailey's narration is a revelation, his ability to shift between accents and tones making each character distinct. The story moves at a cracking pace, each reveal more unexpected than the last. Deighton's prose is lean and mean, wasting no words in building a vivid, claustrophobic world. My only critique? I wish we'd gotten more of the hero's inner thoughts. But that's a small quibble in an otherwise outstanding listen. The production is top-notch, with sound effects used sparingly but effectively to enhance the atmosphere.
