From the first chapter, the audiobook *feels* like a late-night ride through Harlem—windows down, bass thumping, danger lurking at every stoplight. Small’s Juicy is the standout: she nails the character’s mix of streetwise confidence and moments of raw insecurity, like when Juicy’s voice cracks just slightly after Granite dismisses her concerns. It’s a subtle choice, but it sells the emotional stakes better than any monologue could. The men in the story—especially Granite—are rendered with a chilling detachment that makes their occasional tenderness all the more unsettling. Small gives Granite a gravelly baritone that’s equal parts seductive and terrifying, like silk over a switchblade. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The pacing in the middle act drags slightly during the club’s political subplots—Noire’s world-building is immersive, but a few scenes meander when they should *snap*. And while the sex scenes sizzle with chemistry, one particularly abrupt transition from intimacy to violence left me whiplashing (intentionally, I think, but still jarring in audio form). The production quality is top-tier, though: the occasional background noise (distant sirens, muffled laughter) never overpowers the narration, and the editing ensures Small’s performance remains the star. If you love audiobooks that balance erotic tension with genuine menace—and narrators who *become* the characters—this is a standout. Just don’t expect a neat ending; Part 1 leaves you gasping, not satisfied.
