Gambit (Polish Edition)

I’ll admit, I approached *Gambit* skeptical of yet another Cold War thriller, but Siembieda’s novel disarmed me within an hour. The hook isn’t the *what* (yes, there’s espionage, yes, there’s a femme fatale with a knife in her boot) but the *how*—the way the story unfolds like a series of chess puzzles, each chapter a new configuration of threat and opportunity. Bonaszewski’s narration is a clinic in restraint. He doesn’t *act* so much as *inhabit*, his delivery so controlled that when he finally lets a character’s voice crack—like the chess master’s quiet breakdown in Chapter 7—it hits like a physical blow. The production is flawless, with ambient sounds (a ticking clock, a cigarette being tapped) used sparingly but devastatingly to underscore the claustrophobia of a world where trust is the real currency. That said, this isn’t a thriller for the impatient. Siembieda’s pacing is deliberate to a fault; the first act meanders through what feels like unnecessary backstory (do we *really* need 45 minutes on the protagonist’s childhood tournament loss?), and the nonlinear timeline occasionally frustrates more than it intrigues. And while Bonaszewski’s performance is stellar, his cadence can feel monotonous during the novel’s denser political exposition—like listening to a brilliant lecturer who’s forgotten to modulate for his audience. But these are quibbles. By the final act, when the book’s disparate threads converge in a blood-soaked crescendo, you’ll realize the slow setup was the point. *Gambit* isn’t about the thrill of the chase; it’s about the cost of the game. And in an era of disposable thrillers, that’s a rare, bracing gamble worth taking.
