About This Audiobook

Garm isn’t just another spacefaring swordswoman—she’s a Quadrad graduate, trained to dismantle governments from the shadows with precision that borders on surgical. Steven Campbell’s *Garm* delivers a noir-infused sci-fi fantasy where every punch feels like poetry and every betrayal leaves a scar. This isn’t high fantasy’s polished knights or space operas’ swaggering rogues; it’s the gritty underbelly of a galaxy where assassins are celebrities and survival is a secondary skill. Campbell’s worldbuilding crackles with the kind of detail that makes you feel the weight of a plasma blade in your hand, and the Quadrad’s reputation isn’t just lore—it’s a looming shadow that haunts every chapter. The prose is sharp enough to cut, but it’s the emotional gut-punches that linger, like Garm’s quiet fury when she realizes her training was a cage all along. This audiobook thrives in the gray areas where morality is a variable and loyalty is currency. If you want a heroine who’s equal parts lethal and vulnerable, this is your next obsession. Gabrielle de Cuir’s narration doesn’t just deliver the story—she weaponizes it, turning Campbell’s razor-edged dialogue and dense lore into an immersive experience that sticks to your ribs.

AudioBook Atlas

Gabrielle de Cuir’s performance is the audiobook’s secret weapon and its only near-flaw. She nails the Quadrad assassins’ clipped, lethal cadence—every line drips with the kind of confidence that makes you believe Garm could (and would) gut you for looking at her wrong. Her voice work for secondary characters is equally impressive, from the smarmy charm of a mercenary kingpin to the trembling fear of a betrayed ally. The production quality is top-tier, too; the sound design lingers just enough to sell the sci-fi immersion without drowning the storytelling. That said, the pacing stumbles in the final act, where Campbell’s ambition outstrips his tightrope-act structure. A third of the runtime is spent setting up a twist that arrives with all the subtlety of a comet strike, and the final confrontation feels rushed, as if the narrator had to sprint to finish on deadline. Still, de Cuir’s delivery sells the emotional whiplash so well that I forgave the stumble. Garm’s arc—from disciplined weapon to self-made wreckage—is the kind of character study that lingers, and Campbell’s world feels alive in a way that’s rare for the genre. If you’re here for polished prose and zero friction, look elsewhere. If you want a story that leaves bruises, press play.
