About This Audiobook

This isn’t your typical medieval fantasy. *Gorlan’s Ruins* drops Will, a 15-year-old orphan with a sharp tongue and sharper instincts, into the shadowy world of Ranger’s Apprentice. But this isn’t just a coming-of-age tale—it’s a story where invisibility matters more than swords. Flanagan crafts a world where the most dangerous weapon isn’t a blade but the art of being unseen. The pacing is relentless, each chapter a calculated strike that keeps listeners gripping their headphones, desperate to know: *How will Will survive when his mentor is silenced before their bond even forms?* The magic here isn’t in flashy spells or epic battles (though those arrive later), but in the quiet tension of a boy learning to wield the one skill that could save a kingdom: discretion.

The audiobook’s strength lies in its understated confidence. Esben Hansen’s narration doesn’t rely on dramatic flourishes to sell the stakes; instead, he delivers lines with a measured precision that mirrors Will’s own journey. Hansen’s voice crackles with the barely contained energy of a teacher who *knows* you’re smart enough to piece things together yourself. The production enhances this, with subtle shifts in tone marking key moments—Will’s dry humor, the ominous hush of the forest, the sharp intake of breath before a betrayal. This isn’t a story that screams for attention; it’s a story that rewards listeners who lean in, rewarding their patience with a world that feels tactile and lived-in from the first chapter.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I approached *Gorlan’s Ruins* expecting another generic fantasy with a plucky hero and overdone lore. Boy, was I wrong. Will isn’t your typical chosen one—he’s a street-smart orphan with a chip on his shoulder, and his path to mastery isn’t paved with destiny’s help but with its rejection. The first-person narrative sinks its hooks in fast; Will’s voice leaps off the page (or rather, out of Hansen’s mouth) with a realism that’s refreshing. Hansen nails the duality of Will’s character: one moment he’s a cocky teen snapping back at authority, the next he’s a student absorbing lessons with rapt focus. The man’s range is impressive—he can switch from the dry wit of a teenager mocking a stuffy noble to the hushed dread of a boy realizing his mentor might not wake up. That said, the audiobook isn’t without hiccups. The pacing occasionally stumbles in the final act, where a flurry of reveals feels rushed in an otherwise meticulously paced story. And while Hansen’s performance is stellar, the production sometimes overcompensates with sudden volume spikes during action scenes, which jolted me more than once. But these are minor quibbles. What lingers is Flanagan’s refusal to coddle his audience. There’s no infodump, no hand-holding—just a teenager thrust into a world where survival depends on your ability to *listen*, not fight. By the final chapter, you’ll be as invested in Will’s silence as his first spoken word.
