I’ll admit, I was skeptical when my review copy landed in my queue—another post-collapse thriller? But *Guardians of Rockport* quickly proved me wrong. Virtual Voice’s narration is a standout, their delivery shifting seamlessly from the clipped, exhausted cadence of a town mayor fighting to hold things together to the guttural fury of a soldier watching his unit splinter under impossible odds. The audiobook’s real strength, though, is in its refusal to simplify the chaos. Jones doesn’t just serve up a buffet of disaster; he forces you to sit with the unglamorous reality of survival—supply chains breaking, communities fracturing, and the slow, creeping dread of realizing no one’s coming to save you. My only quibble is that a few secondary characters, particularly the European allies, feel underdeveloped, their motivations sketched in too broadly. And while the audiobook’s runtime is tight, there’s one subplot involving a betrayal that wraps up a touch too neatly, leaving a sour note in an otherwise visceral experience. Still, this is a gripping listen for anyone who craves military fiction that doesn’t sanitize the cost of war—or the resilience it can forge. If you want a thriller that respects your intelligence and doesn’t insult your emotions, this is it.
