As an audiobook enthusiast, I was blown away by the unflinching approach Marc Zeale takes in narrating H. H. Holmes: The Life of the American Ripper. His steady, detached tone makes each gruesome account feel all the more shocking – a true masterclass in narrative restraint. The pacing is expertly handled, with the narrative hurtling forward at a breakneck clip that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats. Where the production falls short, however, is in its somewhat meager exploration of Holmes' motivations and psychological makeup. While this omission isn't necessarily a deal-breaker, it does leave listeners with a somewhat incomplete understanding of the monster at the center of this twisted tale.
