Happenstance: A Novella Series (Part Two)

I went into this expecting a light follow-up to the first novella, but McGuire’s second act is a full-throttle descent into paranoia and psychological horror. Virtual Voice’s narration is a masterclass in understatement—their delivery is so flat and controlled that Erin’s spiraling panic feels even more visceral, like watching someone smile through a migraine. The audiobook’s 2h45m runtime is tight, but the pacing never feels rushed; instead, it mirrors Erin’s crumbling stability. My only critique? The abrupt ending left me hungry for more resolution, though I suspect that’s intentional, given the series’ structure. The husband, Travis Alderman, is a masterclass in subtle villainy—his charm is so effortlessly convincing that his cruelty hits twice as hard. That said, the audiobook’s slight distortion in some high-tension scenes occasionally muddled a few key lines, which was frustrating during pivotal moments. Still, the emotional weight and McGuire’s razor-sharp prose more than compensate. If you loved the first installment’s blend of romance and menace, this elevates it to outright chills.
