Hard Time

I’ll admit, I approached *Hard Time* skeptical of yet another ‘I was a kingpin, then I went to prison’ tale. But within 20 minutes, Schaffer’s narration—dry, urgent, and laced with dark humor—had me hooked. His voice *becomes* Attwood: the cocky Brit who thought he was untouchable, then the terrified inmate learning the rules of a game where the stakes are life or a coffin. The standout scenes? The first prison riot, where Schaffer’s delivery makes the chaos *visceral*—you can hear the panic in his voice as Attwood describes dodging flying debris. Less effective are the occasional tangents into prison trivia (yes, we get it, the food is vile), which slow the momentum. But when the story locks onto Attwood’s psychological unraveling—his paranoia, the betrayals, the moments of grotesque humanity—it’s gripping. What surprised me most was the lack of moralizing. Attwood doesn’t ask for sympathy; he lays out his mistakes (the ego, the greed, the willful blindness) with the same bluntness he describes the violence. The audiobook’s pacing stumbles slightly in the middle during legal procedural bits, but the final act—where Attwood’s resilience is tested by solitary confinement—is narrated with such rawness that I found myself rewinding. Schaffer’s British accent adds authenticity, though his American inmate voices occasionally veer into cliché. Still, the production is polished, with no distracting edits or volume spikes. If you love true crime but are tired of glorified gangster tales, this is the antidote: a story about the cost of hubris, told by a man who paid in blood and time.
