I went into *Haystack* expecting another run-of-the-mill romance anthology, but Elsie James surprised me by crafting stories that feel like real life—flawed, funny, and occasionally messy. The standout is the novella-length opener about Olivia, a flight attendant who discovers she’s pregnant just as her marriage crumbles, only to find herself drawn back to her rural hometown. James nails the internal monologue of someone processing grief and unexpected joy at once, and the way she weaves in the rhythm of Olivia’s travel schedule with her small-town roots feels effortless. I also loved the closing story about Trent, a rancher forced to confront his family’s legacy, which balances quiet introspection with dry, self-deprecating humor. Virtual Voice’s narration was a pleasant surprise—it’s rare to find a synthetic voice that doesn’t sound sterile, but this one has a warmth and slight rasp that sells the emotional beats without overplaying them. That said, the delivery in a couple of the stories felt just a hair too even-toned, flattening the contrast between quieter character moments and punchier dialogue. A nitpick, sure, but it occasionally pulled me out of the immersion. If you’re looking for fluffy, escapist romance, this isn’t it; these stories are grounded, sometimes gritty, and all the more compelling for it. The pacing is excellent, clocking in at just over an hour, so it’s perfect for a commute or a lunch break—though I’ll admit I binge-listened to the last three stories in one sitting because I couldn’t bear to pause. Well done.
