The premise is deceptively simple: a man disappears on what should be a joyful errand, and his fiancée’s search for answers peels back layers of secrecy in their seemingly solid relationship. What hooked me wasn’t the mystery itself (though Collomosse plants red herrings with surgical precision), but the *way* the story forces you to interrogate your own assumptions about love and trust. The audiobook’s narration is a huge part of this. Victoria Blunt’s performance as the protagonist is *so* raw in its vulnerability that you’ll cringe during her confrontations with her future in-laws, while Cicely Whitehead’s portrayal of the fiancé’s mother is a chilling study in passive-aggressive control—every “darling” drips with condescension. That said, the pacing *will* test some listeners. The middle act drags as the protagonist circles the same questions, and Joe Eyre’s narration as the missing fiancé—though deliberately ambiguous—sometimes feels *too* detached, making it hard to stay invested in his perspective. The production itself is polished, with subtle sound design (a distant phone ring, a door clicking shut) that heightens the unease, but I wished for more dynamic shifts in tone to match the story’s emotional whiplash. The ending, too, will divide listeners: it’s bold in its ambiguity, but after 10 hours of tension, I craved just a little more catharsis. Still, if you’re drawn to stories that prioritize psychological depth over neat solutions—and don’t mind a narrator who makes you squirm—this is a standout.
