The story’s strength lies in its refusal to romanticize war, even in the afterlife. When Dean’s unit gets ambushed by angels who monologue like supervillains, the fight scenes are visceral, but the aftermath—PTSD, guilt, the quiet moments of camaraderie—hits harder. Arthur’s narration elevates the material significantly. His Dean is weary but never whiny, and his ability to switch between the gruff realism of the soldiers and the over-the-top pomp of the fallen angels (one sounds like a petulant aristocrat, another like a smarmy used-car salesman) keeps the tone from tipping into self-seriousness. My two critiques: First, the lore dumps in the middle act can feel dense—Gilmore’s world is intricate, but the audio format makes it harder to pause and absorb. Second, a few female characters default to ‘tough-but-sexy’ tropes, which feels lazy in an otherwise sharp cast.
