Altagracia brings a grounded urgency to the protagonist—her pauses feel like breaths between panic attacks—while Beverly’s portrayal of Darius’s brother Claude is chillingly understated, making his menace all the more believable. The dual narration isn’t just a gimmick; it mirrors the story’s fractured loyalties and internal conflicts. Holborn’s worldbuilding unfolds through sharp dialogue and sensory urban decay—rusted fire escapes, flickering neon, the smell of wet concrete and sulfur—pulled off expertly in the audio format. Pacing stumbles briefly in the middle third, where exposition overextends during a shelter hideout scene, and the demon-market sequence could’ve used more vocal distinction in background voices. Still, the production design shines: subtle ambient cues—a distant siren, the groan of subway tracks—anchor you in this grim, lived-in reality. It’s rare for an urban fantasy to feel this raw, and even rarer for its audio version to elevate the source material. Not quite heroic, never clean, *Hell and Back* is for listeners who like their redemption earned in scrapes and scars.
