About This Audiobook

Sadie Hunt’s *Hell to Pay* isn’t just another romantic suspense—it’s a high-stakes, morally messy affair where the line between captor and lover blurs faster than a heartbeat in a chase scene. When protagonist Lena seeks shelter from a trafficking ring, she ends up tangled in the arms of the very men who tormented her in high school: the reckless, possessive Ryker; the calculating, controlled Easton; and the brooding, tattooed Kieran. What starts as survival spirals into something far more dangerous—because Lena’s body responds to them in ways her mind refuses to ignore. Hunt writes with a raw, unflinching edge, stripping away the sanitized gloss of most romance to expose the gritty, claustrophobic tension of being hunted *and* wanted at the same time. The audiobook’s narration duo elevates this material further. Alastair Haynesbridge brings a gritted, almost feral intensity to Ryker’s voice, making every growled threat feel like a caress, while Erin Mallon’s Lena is all breathy vulnerability wrapped in steel—her performance crackles with the kind of audible panic that makes you lean in closer, just to hear if she’s okay. Add in Kieran’s raspy, whiskey-laced drawl and Easton’s smarmy, measured tone, and you’ve got a full-cast feast that makes the power dynamics as palpable as the push-and-pull between the characters. This isn’t a slow-burn; it’s a full-throttle sprint where the only question is how far Lena will go to survive—or if she even wants to.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I went into *Hell to Pay* expecting the same old toxic-masculine romance tropes wrapped in a shiny bow—so imagine my shock when Hunt’s writing hit me like a punch to the gut. The first time Ryker’s voice (courtesy of Haynesbridge) snarled, *“You’re mine,”* through my headphones, I nearly dropped my phone. The man doesn’t just narrate the line—he *growls* it, and it’s terrifyingly effective. Mallon’s Lena is the perfect foil: her performance sells the terror of being hunted, but also the way her body betrays her logic every time those three men are in the room. The chemistry isn’t just palpable—it’s explosive, and the audiobook’s pacing mirrors that tension. Haynesbridge and Mallon trade lines with a rhythm that mirrors breathless attraction, while Easton’s nasal, smug cadence (yes, it *works* here) and Kieran’s gravelly tones add layers to the men’s personalities that the text alone couldn’t convey. That said, the production isn’t flawless. A few of the background sounds—footsteps, car engines—felt overlaid rather than integrated, which occasionally pulled me out of the immersion. And while Hunt’s writing thrives on ambiguity, some of the later reveals about the trafficking ring’s reach felt a bit convenient, as if the plot needed a quick jolt of stakes. But these are minor quibbles. By the final chapter, I was clenching my fists, desperate for Lena to make a choice—any choice—as the audiobook’s climax hit like a freight train. If you crave romance that’s as dark as it is delicious, with a side of “how the hell am I still listening to this?”, this is your audiobook.
