Hell World

I’ll be honest: *Hell World* isn’t for everyone. If you like your sci-fi polished and philosophical, look elsewhere. But if you want a narratively unapologetic, gore-splattered romps through a war where death is just a temporary inconvenience, this delivers in spades. Mark Boyett’s performance is a standout—his McGill sounds like a guy who’s seen too much and still cracks jokes, his voice roughened by exhaustion but sharp with dark wit. The supporting cast gets distinct treatments too, from the nasal whine of a cowardly officer to the guttural growls of the Demons, which Boyett sells with just enough menace to avoid sounding ridiculous. The story’s strength lies in its relentless, almost farcical violence. Larson leans hard into the revival-tech premise, turning battles into a dark comedy of errors where soldiers treat death like a lunch break. That said, the plot occasionally stumbles under its own weight—some tactical sequences drag, and the alien motivation feels undercooked compared to the human chaos. But the audiobook’s production is flawless: crisp sound, consistent pacing, and Boyett’s timing turns even the most grotesque moments (like a soldier reattaching his own arm mid-fight) into blackly hilarious set pieces. It’s not deep, but it’s *fun*—like a B-movie with A-level narration.
