I’ll admit: I rolled my eyes at the ‘broken man meets vibrant family’ setup. But *Hello Beautiful* disarmed me within chapters, because Napolitano refuses easy redemption arcs. William isn’t a puzzle to be solved by the Padavano sisters’ love; he’s a man who’s learned to survive by staying half-alive, and the sisters—especially Julia—aren’t saints. They’re meddling, selfish, and fiercely protective in ways that hurt as much as they help. The basketball scenes (yes, *basketball*) are where the book soars: Napolitano uses the sport to map William’s emotional landscape, and Tierney’s narration during these sections is *electric*—her voice tightens with the tension of a game, then softens when the ball becomes a lifeline between William and Sylvie. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. The sisters’ individual storylines (Cecelia’s wedding planning, Sylvie’s academic struggles) occasionally feel like detours from the central question: Can William learn to stay? And while Tierney’s performance is stellar, her cadence for William’s internal monologues sometimes verges on *too* monotone, flattening moments that could’ve used more nuance. But the finale—oh, the finale. Napolitano sticks the landing with a scene so quietly devastating it’ll haunt your next family gathering. This isn’t a book about fixing people. It’s about the messy, incomplete love we offer anyway. Bring tissues. And maybe a basketball.
