I went in expecting another polished Regency romance where the heroine’s biggest problem is choosing between two eligible dukes, but Langton’s novel subverted every expectation. The first-person narration from Arabella’s perspective is ruthlessly honest—she’s flawed, impulsive, and often her own worst enemy, which makes her victories feel earned. Virtual Voice deserves high praise here; their performance is a masterclass in contrast, shifting from Arabella’s clipped, aristocratic tones in public to a vulnerable rasp when she’s alone with her thoughts. The production itself is clean, with just enough ambient detail (horse hooves on cobblestones, the rustle of silk gowns) to immerse you without distracting. My only critique? The middle act drags slightly as Arabella’s internal monologue lingers on her grief too long—it’s realistic, but it risks losing momentum. The payoff, however, is worth the wait. By the final act, the chemistry between Arabella and her brooding, morally ambiguous earl crackles off the audiobook. If you’ve ever wanted a historical romance where the love story feels like a rebellion rather than a reward, this is the one. 4.6 stars with a hearty recommendation.
