Here There Be Dragons

I’ll admit, I side-eyed the concept at first: *Persuasion* but with dragons? Yet *Here There Be Dragons* won me over in the first chapter, thanks to Maria Grace’s razor-sharp dialogue and Benjamin Fife’s narration, which turns even the most mundane dragon-related domestic squabbles into comedy gold. Fife’s voice work is particularly stellar when voicing the dragon, whose grumbly, slightly petulant tone (think a cross between a disgruntled butler and a cat who’s been denied cream) had me laughing aloud. The romance between Frederick and Anne feels earned, their chemistry deepened by shared exasperation over their new scaly ward. That said, the middle act drags slightly—pun intended—when the plot pivots to a subplot about dragon politics that, while clever, lacks the snap of the domestic scenes. And while Fife’s Austen-esque delivery is mostly pitch-perfect, his female voices occasionally veer into overly breathy territory, a minor but noticeable quibble. Still, the audiobook’s production is polished, with seamless editing and a score that swells at just the right moments (the scene where the dragon *accidentally* sets fire to a ballroom is pure auditory chaos in the best way). If you love your fantasy with a side of social satire and your romance with a dash of chaos, this is a gem. Just maybe don’t listen while drinking tea—you *will* snort-laugh.
