Laura Jennings’ narration is the frost around the flame in *Hidden in Lies*. Her voice carries the weight of a winter’s breath—cool, crisp, and just strong enough to cut through the story’s tension without stealing the spotlight. She nails the Swedish setting, her pronunciation of place names and dialogue lending authenticity without overplaying it. The pacing of the narration is near-perfect, never rushing through key revelations or lingering too long on peripheral details. That said, there were moments where the distinction between characters’ voices felt a tad too subtle, especially during rapid-fire exchanges; a sharper contrast might’ve made the dialogue even more immersive. The story itself is a masterclass in restrained dread. The university student’s death isn’t just a plot device—it’s the catalyst for a slow-motion explosion of lies, with each character’s alibi feeling like a ticking time bomb. The ski resort’s pristine veneer masks something far more sinister, and Sten’s ability to weave the setting into the narrative’s moral decay is downright chilling. My only critique is that the resolution, while satisfying, ties up a few threads a bit too neatly, leaving the moral ambiguities feeling slightly domesticated. Still, the audiobook’s production is top-notch, with clean, uncompressed sound that makes Jennings’ performance feel like it’s happening right in your ear. If you’re a fan of mysteries where the environment is just as much a character as the people, this one will haunt you long after the final chapter.
