I'll be honest - I went into His to Own: 50 Loving States, Arkansas with high expectations, and Theodora Taylor's writing completely delivered. Clementine Dove's narration was a revelation, capturing the protagonist's vulnerability and determination with precision. At times, I found myself wincing at the cruelty and injustice that our protagonist faces, but Dove's measured tone kept the emotions in check, allowing me to process the narrative without becoming overwhelmed. As the story progresses, Taylor's use of atmospheric descriptions of the Arkansas landscape adds to the sense of foreboding, and Dove's delivery is pitch-perfect. However, I did find some of the supporting characters to be slightly one-dimensional, and at times, the pacing felt a touch rushed. That being said, these minor quibbles didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the audiobook, and I'd highly recommend His to Own: 50 Loving States, Arkansas to fans of crime fiction and noir.
