I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I heard an audiobook about an ‘Adept’ in a sci-fi setting—it’s a trope that’s been done to death, but M.T. Tress flips it on its head with ruthless efficiency. Desmond isn’t your typical Chosen One; he’s reluctant, flawed, and constantly second-guessing himself, which makes his growth feel earned. The aliens, particularly the Empire’s enforcers, are terrifying not because they’re cartoonishly evil, but because their logic is so coldly bureaucratic. It’s a fresh take that grounds the fantasy elements in something unsettlingly real. Jack Smith’s narration is a standout—his voice carries Desmond’s frustration and fear with a grittiness that fits the tone perfectly, while Anne Marie Lebeaur’s crisp, almost detached delivery for the alien characters adds a chilling layer of authenticity. My only sticking points were a few pacing lulls in the middle of the book, where the political maneuvering dragged slightly too long for my taste. The production itself is top-tier, with clear audio and a seamless blend of voices that never feels jarring. By the final act, I was fully invested in Desmond’s fight for survival, even if I still don’t trust the aliens’ motives. If you’re looking for a sci-fi adventure that’s as cerebral as it is action-packed, this is a must-listen.
