He voices the boy with a quiet earnestness, and the adults with a rough kindness that feels lived-in. The production is clean, with no jarring edits, and the absence of background music makes the silence feel intentional—right up to the point where it starts to feel oppressive. That’s when I realized Stifter *wants* the quiet to press in. The story’s power lies in its refusal to rush, and Schwarz respects that. I do have one quibble: the translation (or adaptation) occasionally flattens some of Stifter’s more lyrical turns of phrase. A few lines that should feel like mountain vistas end up clunky, like a misplaced snow fence in an otherwise pristine landscape. And while Schwarz’s performance is solid, he sometimes hesitates before key phrases, as if unsure whether to lean into their weight.
