Olivia King’s narration here is a masterclass in tonal range. She nails the protagonist’s scrappy, self-deprecating humor, the prince’s regal yet guarded cadence, and the sheer menace of the faerie court’s elite without overacting. The audiobook’s 15-hour runtime never drags because the story’s pacing is tight, balancing political scheming with intimate character moments. That said, the romance’s middle act drags slightly—some conflicts could have been resolved more crisply to avoid the inevitable slowdown—but the payoff is worth it. Wildenstein’s worldbuilding is the real star: the magic system is inventive (no tired "chosen one" tropes here), and the faerie society’s hierarchy feels brutally real, with all the petty cruelty and glittering oppression you’d expect. The audiobook’s production is flawless, with no distracting background noise or jarring edits. If you love your fantasy with a side of biting dialogue and a heroine who earns her crown through grit rather than grace, this is a must-listen.
