His Ayrion is a masterclass in understated intensity—gritty, yes, but never a caricature of the brooding antihero. The real magic here is how Reynolds modulates the emotional spectrum: one moment, Ayrion’s voice is a dry rasp, exhausted from years of survival; the next, it’s a razor’s edge of controlled fury when the system that spat him out tries to swallow him whole. The production’s sound design deserves equal praise, particularly the way ambient noise—rain on cobblestones, the creak of leather armor, the distant hum of magic—feels tactile, immersing you in Aramoor’s smog-choked underbelly without ever overwhelming the dialogue. That said, the audiobook isn’t without its hiccups. Reynolds occasionally over-enunciates certain words in tense scenes, which, while technically precise, can jolt you out of the moment. And while the pacing is generally tight, the middle act sags just enough to make you wish Wisehart had tightened the screws on a few subplots. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise stellar listen. *Hurricane* isn’t just a fantasy novel—it’s a character study wrapped in a storm, and Reynolds sells every gust.
